![]() Playing 13 September - 9 October 2010 The National Children's Theatre Trust (NCTT) is staging African Tapestry, drawing on folk tales, music and dance from across the continent, to weave the fabric for a literally fabulous interactive musical for children, which cultivates a love for Africa and her many cultures, and has as its underlying theme an awareness of environmental issues. Timeless - yet as topical as today's headlines - African Tapestry is a richly textured high energy weaving of ethnic storytelling, poetry and mime, combined with lively songs and traditional dance, and backed by the pulsating rhythm of tribal instruments. Audiences help create the unfolding action, as they participate in the tales together with the cast, becoming animals, cleaning up litter, creating a storm that pelts down on the land - and even turning into a suction pipe that drains oil out of the ocean! ![]() The music, arranged by Tebogo Tshotetsi, is played on authentic hand-made instruments such as the marimba, reed flutes, the okarani and the tshaga. The stories are masterfully told, the songs beautifully sung and the animal movements cleverly executed by the enthusiastic, energetic and talented cast, which includes the dynamic Sihle Ndaba, recently seen in the NCT's smash hit production of Seussical Jr, and Stephanie Baartman, who came third in the Patricia Lewis-hosted Supersterre on SABC2. Artistic Director of the NCT, and creator of African Tapestry, Joyce Levinsohn says, "During the recent World Cup our sense of belonging to the warm, welcoming and generous continent of Africa was joyously celebrated. More than ever, Africa belongs to us all. Africa's folk tales burst with robust energy, and so many of them reveal a harmony with nature which takes on a deeper significance as Africa's environmental frailty worsens." African Tapestry will run at The National Children's Theatre (NCT), 3 Junction Avenue, Parktown, from 13 September until 9 October 2010. During the government school term, performances are weekdays at 9.00am and 10.30am. During school holidays, performances are Mondays to Saturdays at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Ticket prices: R70 (children) and R80 (adults). Block bookings and specials are available for schools, groups and birthday parties. For booking enquiries please phone Sue. Bookings can be made through the theatre on 011 484 1584, and through Computicket on 083 915 8000. Booking is essential. There is ample free safe parking available within the grounds of the complex.
