Following the enormous success of "The World of Beatrix Potter" the National Children's Theatre (NCT) formerly the Johannesburg Youth Theatre (JYT) is proud to announce its novel new production: a rare and enchanting theatrical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved and timeless classic "The Secret Garden" written in 1911. This exciting new offering, which will play during the July school holidays, starts its run at the NCT's Parktown premises on Monday 12 June. "The Secret Garden" tells the heartwarming story of a young orphan, Mary Lennox, a "sour looking girl with a nasty temper". She is sent to live at Misselthwaite Manor, a gloomy fortress with 100 rooms. Her uncle and guardian is rarely at home, while his son Colin never leaves his room convinced he is an incurable invalid. Mary meets the "crusty" gardener Ben and Dickon who understands the language of birds, animals and flowers. It is with their help that she discovers the secret garden and coaxes it back to life - roses bloom again, daffodils burst through the earth and tall white lilies reach for the sky. Something wonderful and magical begins to touch the lives of all that enter the secret enclave. During her stay at Misselthwaite Manor, Mary becomes aware of Colin's tantrums. These are so frightening that the servants accede to his every request - simply to keep him calm. It is Mary's sincere belief, that if Colin could be taken to the secret garden, he would come to love the garden and that its magic would heal him. 'The Secret Garden' is all about the healing powers of love and the miracle of rebirth. In this distinguished award-winning work, the growth and blossoming of the earth is synonymous to that of the human spirit. It is a story of the belief in love that lends itself to the magic of the theatre and creates the opportunity for wonderful costumes, imaginative stage sets and delightful songs. This is interactive theatre at its best, inviting the audience to participate in this play which becomes a garden of the audience's own imagination. This is a family show not to be missed.
