archive OLIVER TWIST 6 June to 30 July 2005
Please Sir, can I have some more! The public has been saying, "More - Please Sir, can I have some more!" and the Johannesburg Youth Theatre (JYT) is responding by staging a new version of the ever-popular 'OLIVER TWIST' by the great storyteller Charles Dickens, from 6 June to 30 July 2005. The season will straddle the winter school holidays. Although set during the Industrial Revolution in Victorian times, the story of Oliver Twist, more than a century later, mirrors a great deal of the societal problems we face in South Africa today. Most of all, it is the children who suffer and, like Oliver in Dickens' story, there are still countless young children on our streets, growing up as beggars amongst criminals. The lives of these young people becomes corrupted and they are often led into crime. Oliver Twist is a rattling good story and, in this stage adaptation, multi-award winning Joyce Levinsohn, Artistic Director of the JYT has taken great care to highlight the parallels, lessons and messages from Dickens' classic for a contemporary South African audience. Both young and old will be touched by this new version. The ending is what the audience wants - we witness Oliver's triumph of innocence over evil; we escape with him from the dark and murky underworld to the bright warmth of a loving home. The audience will respond to Oliver's needs and warn him, protect him and laugh with him. Oliver touches us as no other child in fiction has. All the legendary characters are in this version - Fagin, Mr. Brownlow, the Artful Dodger and Nancy. The well-known songs - "I'd do anything for you", "Food, Glorious Food", "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" - will delight and entertain audiences. Dickens, ever the great story teller, wanted his stories to be as widely read as possible. He would have appreciated this version of 'OLIVER TWIST' - after the show, he would have loved hearing the audience say, "More - Please Sir, can I have some more!" Authentic costumes, songs from the musical, professional actors - and a cast of children make this a show not to be missed! 'OLIVER TWIST' opens its run at the Johannesburg Youth Theatre, 3 Junction Avenue, Parktown, on Monday, 6 June and will run until Saturday, 30 July 2005. There is ample parking available within the grounds of the complex. Performances run from Mondays to Saturdays, either at 10:30am or at 2:30pm.
