7 November to 21 December 2005 ON THE BALL Everyone will have a ball at the "great ball" that the Johannesburg Youth Theatre (JYT) is planning for its festive holiday production of 'Cinderella'. This "musical fantasy" will play from November until Wednesday 21 December at the JYT's centrally located premises in Parktown. Multi award-winning Artistic Director of the JYT, Joyce Levinsohn, has become synonymous with her upbeat re-working of old favourites and says: "This staging will contain all the ingredients expected of a 'magical' experience and, while based on Perrault's original, written almost 300 years ago, this 'today' version will be alive with humour, plenty of 'now' music and some unexpected twists." In the established tradition of the JYT, this 'Cinderella' is intended to stimulate and draw on the imagination of the audience. Levinsohn continues: "This is a romantic story, in which the onlooker is challenged to exercise the mind's eye rather than being presented with the finished product of conventional theatre." The JYT is known for shows designed to delight the entire family and its forthcoming production of this most quintessential of the fairytales, is no exception. The heroine who overcomes ever hardship, is exploited by two ugly stepsisters and saved by a vibey, globetrotting Fairy Godmother. Combined with glamorous costumes and a creative set, this staging will enchant a range of audiences. Young members of the audience will gain a sense of achievement and importance as they help the story along. There is lots of fun and participation even for the older and more jaded, this joyful tale of the triumph of love and goodness, offers a welcome break from reality! 'Cinderella' opens its run at the Johannesburg Youth Theatre (JYT), 3 Junction Avenue, Parktown, on Monday 7 November to Wednesday 21 December with performances Mondays to Saturdays at 10:30 and 14:30 - public holidays included. Bookings are essential and can be made either directly at the theatre by phoning (011) 484 - 1584 during office hours or at any Computicket outlet. Ticket prices are R40 for children and R50 for adults at the theatre. Arrangements for block bookings, birthday parties or specials can also be made by phoning the theatre directly. There is ample parking available on the grounds of the complex. The duration of the show is approximately one and a half hours.
